Program Details and Requirements for Students

Doctor To Be - Summer Intensive Program

A 7-day program structured for the introduction, development, and training of veterinary medicine to aspiring students ages 11-18 interested in the profession. This program provides participants with an in-depth, hands-on experience of becoming a veterinarian.

DBEI is excited to annouce the Doctor To Be Summer Veterinary Intensive, a 7-day program structured for the introduction, development, and training of veterinary medicine, to aspiring students ages 11-18 interested in the profession.

The students can expect an in-depth exploration of:

  • Veterinary concepts
  • Species/ breed identification
  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Zoonosis
  • Animal handling & restraint
  • Canine/Feline cadaver lab
  • Behind the scenes Zoo tour

Class size is limited to 30 selected students. Students are provided with food and lodging, personalized scrubs, a personal tablet containing Saunders Veterinary Dictionary and other reading material for future use, and the certificate of completion.

In addition, acceptance in the program provides access to a community of veterinary professionals to answers questions, provide assistance and guidance well beyond the intensive program as students matriculate through academia. Accepted students would be responsible for a $1000 participation cost with the remainder of the program funded through The Diarra Blue Education Initiative and our generous donors.

Admission & Selection Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 11-18 years of age. (Classes will be divided by ages 11-14 and 15-18)
  • Have a strong interest in being a veterinarian and a love for animal science
  • Excellent work ethic
  • A letter of recommendation and personal character from a teacher at your school
  • 5 recommendation references from non-family/close friends
  • 200-500 word essay of why you want to join the DBEI
  • Video conference with the student and parents. Up to 3 required
  • A short video of the student working with animals; no more than 10 minutes

  • GROUP B (ages 15-18)
    • Summer 2020 – Tuskegee University
    • Summer 2020 – Ohio State University
